When all
else Fails

by Elizabeth Olatunji

A note before you arrive

I have a story I would like to tell you.

It is a story about food.

My story has three chapters. But before I tell you the story, let me tell you a little about where it came from.

When All Else Fails began during a period when I was trying to find my place creatively. After countless attempts to find a path that would give shape and direction to the ideas I carried, I found myself returning to the one thing that had always made sense to me: food.

But I was beginning to see food differently. Cooking was no longer just about making something to eat; it became a way for me to explore creativity, culture, beauty, memory and the everyday rituals that surround us. I began documenting those ideas through photography, styling and writing, and slowly, they became this journal.

This project has lived with me for a long time. Through Palelé Studios, I’m now beginning to explore what happens when food moves beyond the kitchen and becomes a language for creative expression.

After all the experimenting, making and putting the pieces together, I’m finally ready to open this world up and invite you into it.

It is a story about food, but also about memory, culture, comfort and connection. A story that began on the page and has now found its way into a space where you can see it, taste it, and experience it for yourself.

The journal

Three chapters

Chapter one

Home ground

Nigerian foods and the culture that surrounds them: where they come from, who makes them, and what they carry.

Chapter two

Elsewhere

Western foods, explored through photography and intuitive writing.

Chapter three

Comfort

Personal comfort meals, and recipes cherished by me and the people closest to me.

The exhibition

Four installations

Inspired by the journal, When All Else Fails takes familiar elements of Nigerian food culture as a starting point for exploring memory, culture and creative expression, through four food installations, you can walk around, look closely at, and taste from.

01

Corn

Market sacks, still full; a nod to the women who carry the harvest into the city, and the first step of the journey from farm to table.

02

Palm Wine

A table that stands on calabashes; gathering, pouring and the old ritual of sharing a drink.

03

Garden Egg

A garden that grows up to meet you. Pick your bite straight from the stem.

04

Suya

Smoke, spice and the glow of the roadside grill after dark, raised into a column of fire.

A question that ponders within me

“What can food become beyond the table?”

Come find out with me.
